Concrete media coverage centers on whether Europe’s leaders successfully presented proposals for ending the war and protecting Ukraine’s interests.

International coverage focuses on the media dispute between Norway’s prime minister and Financial Times over the substance and balance of the call. The European leaders’ account emphasizes their own proposals, Putin’s response, approximately equal speaking time and the use of a translator, while Financial Times says Putin focused almost the entire call on medieval Slavic history and historical explanations of the conflict with Ukraine.

The approximately 90-minute call took place on 27 October and was initially planned to last less than 30 minutes. A translator participated, and the speakers said the speaking time was distributed approximately equally. The call occurred ahead of US-mediated peace talks planned for the following month. Støre and Stubb participated as leaders of their own countries rather than on behalf of Europe. The European Commission was informed in advance, and Støre and Stubb subsequently informed Volodymyr Zelensky about the call. The conversation was described as the first direct contact between Putin and European leaders supporting Ukraine since his call with Emmanuel Macron in July 2025.
